β¦ Synopsis
Known and possible phenolic and primary and secondary amine metabolites of lidocaine were added to urine from drug-naive rats. These metabolites were derivatized in this aqueous medium by acetylation with acetic anhydride or by pentafluorobenzoylation with pentafluorobenzoyl chloride. The derivatives were simultaneously extracted into an organic solvent. The products were separated by gas chromatography (flame ionization detection for acetates and electron-capture detection for pentafluorobenzoates) and identified by combined gas chromatographyhnass spectrometry. Mass spectral fragmentation pathways were readily deduced ; diagnostic fragment ions were identified and were valuable for characterization purposes. Structural isomers could be distinguished on the basis of their GC retention times.
Extractive derivatization using pentafluorobenzoyl chloride is an attractive analytical procedure for the identification of phenolic and dealkylated metabolites of lidocaine.

Oestrogen metabolites from the urine of males and pregnant and non-pregnant females were enriched by a procedure involving column chromatography on adsorber resins, gels and ion exchangers, enzymatic solvolysis and extraction, thereby separating the oestrogens from most of the interfering material.
A procedure for characterization of sialic acid-like monosaccharides, i.e. 3deoxy-2-ulosonic acids, by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is described. The free monosaccharides were reduced with NaBH, and the resulting 3-deoxyaldonic acids were acetylated. Five-membered ring lactones were obtained
The gas-liquid-chromatographic retention-times and the mass-spectral features of partially methylated D-galactononitrile acetates are reported. Distinctive fragmentation of each of the mono-O-methyl derivatives allows their identification, and the results are applicable to the same substituted deriv
