A new set of edge-conditioned basis functions is used to determine the modal characteristics of a large variety of nonstandard waveguide structures. Since the electromagnetic field includes the proper edge conditions at metallic corners and since the new basis functions are readily Fourier transform

✦ Synopsis
We present a modified coupled-mode formulation for an asymmetric two-waveguide coupler in which the trial field is expressed as a linear combination of the fundamental modes of the individual waveguides, with an additionalphase-cariation term determinedfrom the orthogonality of the normal modes. The method provides more accurate solutions than the conventional rheo y , and the results satisfy power consemation.
