✦ Synopsis
An analytical expression is derived for the energy in an acoustic wave resulting from pulsed laser excitation of optically thm samples. Assumptions used to derive this cxprcssion include a small temperature increase due to optlcal absorption. a timedependent expansion limited by the acoustic wave propagation time. and a finite sample length. These results arc described and then analyzed in terms of the degree to which acoustic energy loss would affect photothcrmal spectroscopy signals. It IS found that the acoustic energy loss can be neglected in most pulsed laser-excited photothermal spectroscopic mcasurcmcnts ofoptlcally thm samples
