## Abstract Traditionally, sulfonated polymers are used as separator materials in PEM fuel cells. Based on recent experimental results on model compounds this paper critically discusses the potentials and limits of sulfonic acid and alternatively phosphonic acid and heterocycles (imidazole) as prot
