β¦ Synopsis
Metastases to the salivary glands from outside the head and neck are rare. The world literature reports 53 cases to the parotid, and 25 to the submandibular-submaxillary gland. This is the first report of a metastasis to the accessory parotid gland. HEAD & NECK 1990; 12:421425 Accessory parotid glands consist of separate glandular and ductal structures lying anterior to the main parotid gland. Frommer,' in a cadaver study, detailed that the glands may lie on the masseter muscle or in the buccal fat pad. The majority of these glands lie parallel to the parotid duct and may course along the buccal branch of the facial nerve. Accessory parotid glands were demonstrated in 21% of the normal adult cadaver dissections.
Primary pathology involving the accessory parotid glands has been previously d o ~u m e n t e d ~-~ and consists of cysts secondary to sialoadenitis and benign and malignant primary tumors. We report the first documented case of metastatic disease to the accessory parotid gland.
