Our earlier studies in the chimpanzee and rhesus monkey suggest a strong relationship between activity in different types of taste fibers and gustatory behavior. In the present study this relationship was further explored in the common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus jacchus. Thus the responses of 43 single chorda tympani (CT) and 40 glossopharyngeal nerve (NG) taste fibers were recorded and related to the results of two-bottle preference (TBP) and conditioned taste aversion (CTA) tests. Three salts, 4 acids, 6 bitter compounds and 30 compounds bitter or sweet to humans were used. In both nerves, hierarchical cluster analysis of the fibers' responses revealed 3 major fiber clusters characterized by predominant sensitivity to either sweeteners (S cluster), bitter compounds (Q cluster), or acids (H cluster). In agreement with earlier studies, the activity in a particular cluster of taste fibers was associated with the behavioral response. In the TBP tests, the marmosets rejected compounds (quinine, sucrose octaacetate, tannic, and aristolochic acids) which stimulated the Q cluster, while the 20 sweeteners that stimulated only the S cluster were preferred. Stimuli which elicited responses in both the S and the Q clusters were either rejected (stevioside and D-phenylalanine) or non-preferred (ampame, xylitol, saccharin). Marmosets neither preferred nor rejected sweeteners that gave no taste fiber response. In CTA tests, the consumption of 21 sweeteners was significantly suppressed in the conditioned group while 6 stimuli that evoked no taste fiber response, were consumed at the same level as water.
