โœฆ Synopsis

The main trends in the study of nuclear fuels (Pu, U and their alloys) in the USSR are briefly reviewed. The properties of Pu metal are briefly outlined, together with the laws governing its reactions with other elements in various positions in the periodic table. Properties of uranium are considered, including its response to thermal cycling and the effects of irradiation on its thermal, mechanical and alloying behaviour. Methods of pressing uranium are discussed. The effects of neutron irradiation on the structures and properties of metals and alloys.
