✦ Synopsis

We are happy to provide the abstracts of the 5th International Workshop CAS '99 -Computer Assisted Surgery & Rapid Prototyping in Medicine, which was held in Erlangen, Germany, from October 14 -16, 1999.

With over 250 participants from 19 countries, CAS '99 can be considered a great success. We were able to welcome again many of those who attended the workshops in 1995 and in 1997, and also many new participants.

Our intention was to provide an open forum for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and experiences. Therefore, presentations covered basic aspects as well as applications of Computer Aided Surgery (CAS).

Preoperative and intraoperative imaging, image processing and pre-operative planning, intraoperative navigation and robotics were covered both by basic scientists as the developers and by surgeons as the end-users. Papers were augmented by technical exhibits, work-station demonstrations, and by poster exhibits.

Applications of Rapid Prototyping Techniques (RPT) in medicine, a CAS subspecialty, were a particular focus again. The European Union-sponsored PHIDIAS group, which evaluates the use of these techniques, held its annual meeting jointly with CAS '99.

Time and opportunities for discussions and personal exchange were provided. Our traditional icebreaker party with beer from the barrel and the workshop banquet added to this.

We hope that the workshop CAS 2001, to be held in Erlangen from October 18 -20, 2001, will equal the success of CAS '99. Up-to-date information on this workshop can be obtained from our homepage (http://www.imp.uni-erlangen.de/cas2001/).
