โœฆ Synopsis

The paper describes absorption and shower producing effects of cosmic radiation in water, coal, copper sulphate, iron sulphide, sand, and barium sulphate. The measurements were made with triple coincidence Geiger counters, near sea level. The coefficient of absorption was not found to be strictly proportional to density, substances of higher atomic number showing departures. The coefficients per bound electron was found to be constant, within the precision of the observations. Showers were found to follow the direction of the primaries, and to show maxima with increasing thicknesses of shower-producing matter in the region of 5o-Ioo gms./cm3 of material.
