✦ Synopsis
It is demonstrated that the mass attenuation coefficient is not linearly related to the inverse intensity of continuous scattered radiation as assumed in the scattering internal standard method. A power function relationship between the absorption and the scatter over more than a limited range of matrix composition is predicted theoretically and supported by experimental results. As an example of the application of the method it was applied to the determination of trace Sr in geological samples. The accuracy of this method is much better than that of the traditional scattered internal standard technique over a wide range of matrix compositions.
