✦ Synopsis
The absorption spectrum of MgO-NiO solid solutions between 2500 and 8000 ]k shows five discrete bands with maxima at 2900 A, 4000 A, 4650 A, 6700 A and 7200 A. At liquid air temperature the 4000 A. and 4700 A bands show a fine structure with Av ----235 --240 cm -l . MgO containing 10 -3 mol NiO shows a green cathodo-luminescence at liquid air temperature in a band consisting of at least eight equidistant sub-bands with a Av ----194 cm -1.
The bands are attributed to electronic transitions between various states of the Ni 2+ ion broadened by coupling with vibrations. This explains why NiO irradiated with 2500/~ < A < 8000 t%. does not show photoconductivity.
