The prevalence of antibodies against HTLV-I among Kyushu natives aged 16 to 39 years who moved from Nagasaki and Kagoshima prefectures to Aichi prefecture (a non-endemic area for ATL) was compared by their cities or counties of birth. The positive rate of anti-HTLV-l antibody was 2.4% (I 1/400) amon

β¦ Synopsis
To examine the prevalence of infection by human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) among seronegative subjects, healthy subjects on Tsushima Island, Japan, where the infection is endemic, were evaluated. A total of 209 healthy adults were examined for HTLV-I provirus in peripheral blood mononuclear cells by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), as well as for anti-HTLV-l antibodies by the particle agglutination (PA) method, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and by immunofluorescence analysis (IF). A total of 76 subjects were positive and I33 were negative for the provirus, showing a close correlation with the results of 3 assays for anti-HTLV-l serum antibodies. None of the seronegative subjects reacted positively on PCR analysis. These observations indicate that seronegative HTLV-I carriers are rare in an area of Japan in which this viral infection is endemic.

To determine the epidemiological characteristics of human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) infection in the endemic village of Maripasoula, French Guiana, 1,614 persons (83.2% of the population) aged 2 to 91 years (mean age 21) were studied from November 1994 through April 1995. Dear Sir, Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a malignancy of mature T cells which develops among individuals infected with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1). ATL shows characteristic geographic distribution in the world, being endemic in south-western Japan, the Caribbean region,
