✦ Synopsis

The transition radiation emitted by a relativistic electron that passed through a thin layer of matter was studied. The case of an ideal metallic foil and the case of a transparent dielectric plate were considered and compared. It is shown, that taking into account a limited transverse size of the target can lead to a strong distortion of the transition radiation spectrum in the infrared waverange.
