✦ Synopsis

In this study 59 female patients who had been operated on between the years 1985 and 1991 for recurrent incontinence of urine were followed with urodynamic studies. Two different surgical methods were used: 34 women were treated with a Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz operation, and a fascial sling procedure was employed in 25. At the time of the urodynamic follow-up examination the patients had experienced an average history of 2 years' recurrent incontinence of urine. The patients' subjective observation of urinary incontinence (Gaudenz Questionnaire) was objectified by a clinical cough test, pad test, cystometry and sonography of the small pelvis. The urodynamic studies showed a 79.4% improvement after the Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz operation, compared to a 52% improvement after the fascial sling operation. The success of the two operations was assessed by evaluation of the depression quotient, which showed the Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz operation to produce a significant improvement, which was not found to be the case after the fascial sling operation.
