✦ Synopsis


A simple and inexpensive weighing device capable of weighing loads in excess of 30 kg has been constructed by coupling a medium-size beam balance to a damped laboratory balance. The combination of accuracy and damping in a laboratory balance added to the capacity of a counter-balanced beam gave a system which was robust under heavy load, stable in turbulent air and easily monitored for continuous weighing. A test showed no bias in error over the range from 1 to 30 kg and a mean error of + 0.75 g.
