β¦ Synopsis
Single crystals of a new V(III) monophosphate (\mathrm{CdV}{2} \mathrm{O}\left(\mathrm{PO}{4}\right){2}) have been prepared and their structure has heen determined by X-ray diffraction. The monophosphate crystallizes in the space group Pnma with (a=14.308(2) \AA, b=6.318(1) \AA, c=7.248(1) \AA). The tridimensional framework (\left[\mathrm{V}{2} \mathrm{P}{2} \mathrm{O}{9}\right]{\infty}) is built up from (\left[\mathrm{VO}{2}\right]{\infty}) rutile chains and (\left[\mathrm{VPO}{8}\right]{x}) chains of corner-sharing (\mathrm{VO}{6}) octahedra and (\mathrm{PO}{4}) tetrahedra that form (\left|\mathrm{V}{2} \mathrm{PO} \mathrm{O}{7}\right|{\infty}) infinite layers waving along (100). 'Two suecessive (\left.\left|V_{2}\right|^{P}(){7}\right|{\infty}) layers are comnected along a through (\mathrm{PO}{4}) tetrahedra. The latter share one edge with the (\mathrm{VO}{6}) octahedra of one layer forming (\mathrm{VPO}_{8}) units, and the two opposite corners with two octahedra belonging to the rutile chain of the next layer. This framework delimits small tunnels running along b that are empty, and intersecting (\langle 011\rangle) tunnels where the cadmium ions are located with a distorted octahedral coordination. 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
