Proceedings of the 7th Symposium of the Bnltic Marine Biologists, Rostock 1981 =Limnologica 15 (2). 385pp. Berlin: Akademie-Verlag 1984.

I n 1957, a "Committee of Baltic Marine Biologists" was organized. This association successfully completed important work on the intercalibration of marine biological methods and established contact among the scientists involved in studies in the Baltic Sea. The main topics of the Rostock. symposium concern progress made in the analysis of the ecosystem and the autecology and ecophysiology of brackish water organisms, including the effects of pollution. The 48 papers published in this special issue of Limnologica start with a summarizing contribution by B.-0. JANSSON: "Baltic sea ecosystem analysis: critical areas for future research". It mentions that the influence of ocean water has increased during recent decades, making the Baltic gradually saltier. There are many papers on long-term variations and on ecosystem studies of special groups, including eelgrrwss communities, benthos and plankton. As an introduction to the brackish water section, H. THEEDE describes physiological approaches to environmental problems. Cordylophora caspia is a genuine brackish water species, the ecological niche of which is described by E. A. ARNDT. Several papers in this section concern the resistance of species to changing salinity, temperature and hydrogen sulfide. The Liibeck Bight in the Western Baltic is a region with unfavourable oxygen conditions. During long periods, the benthic zone is uncolonized, but in 1980/81, F. GOSSELCK &. F. GEORGI reported a recolonization by polychaete communities. H.
