โฆ Synopsis
In order to increase the accuracy of measurements and the counting rate when working with liquid hydrogen targets, the amount of hydrogen in the path of the beam must be increased, the thermal insulation improved and the amount of extraneous matter both along and perpendicular to the beam must be reduced. The opposing nature of these conditions and the desire to approach 47r geometry in counting secondary particles requires a compromise solution to be sought for each experiment. The target described was designed so that alterations to it between one experiment and another should be minimal.
Design of the target
The liquid hydrogen target, used in experiments to study the charge exchange cross-section ~r + p -, lr ยฐ + n, 1 is shown in Fig. 1.
