β¦ Synopsis
The high intensity photolysis (360 nm > hirr > 310 nm) of aqueous [W(CN)8]3-ions leads to products not formed under normal intensities, i.e. [W"'O(CN),]'ions and a previously reported, highly coloured species (h,= =537 nm) (denoted as P-537) which could not be isolated. A detailed quantum yield study reveals that the new photochemical channel is characterized by an 1' dependence (1 is the intensity of absorbed light), i.e. it is a twoquantum process and involves an absorbing intermediate state giving access to a high energy state. It is also found that the same high energy channel is reached when Aj, < 230 nm, reaching a quantum yield of about 0.1 at 200 nm.
