โฆ Synopsis
The diphenylketyl radical was generated and subsequently excited using a sequential two-laser, two-colour technique. The quantum yield of fluorescence from the excited diphenylketyl radical was then determined using a diode array detector with reference to the excited diphenylmethyl radical which is produced under identical conditions and has the known fluorescence quantum yield of 0.31. Comparison of the integrated emission resulting from deactivation of both radicals under identical conditions (absorbed photons, spatial distribution, etc.) yielded a value of the quantum yield of fluorescence of the diphenylketyl radical of 0. I1 kO.02. This high value is consistent with the easy visual detection of this emission, but contrasts with a recent literature value.
