Ackerman's influence on pathology, surgery, and oncology was enormous, and he was widely acclaimed around the world as an innovator who played a key role in making surgical pathology an integral part of clinical medicine. Born in Auburn, New York, in 1905, he received his medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1932. From 1932 to 1936, Lauren Ackerman completed training in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. From 1936 to 1939, he was a pathology resident at Pondville Hospital in Wrentham, Massachusetts, and at Rutland Tuberculosis Sanitarium in the same state. At Pondville, he worked with Shields Warren, one of the legendary figures in American pathology and, during this time, developed his lifelong interest in tumor pathology and the effects of radiation therapy on tumors.
