โœฆ Synopsis

Change is both necessary and exciting. It holds the promise for betterment. After six years at the helm of Biotechnology & Bioengineering, I feel it is time for change, for passing on the editorship of the journal. I still enjoy very much the responsibilities and excitement of this position, but the power and rewards that come with it can become addictive, and that would not be good for either the journal or me. The operation of the journal is in a fine state. Its international reputation and respect, as best as one can assess them, are enviable. Submissions have risen from about 500 in 1990-91 to nearly 750 this year, and, as a result, the selectivity of the published papers is at an all time high. There have been many changes in B&B since 1 took over its editorship in 1990, but more are now necessary. The volume of the submissions, the sophistication of the various areas covered by the journal, and the fast evolution of the field call for more Associate Editors, for renewal in the Editorial Board, for new initiatives.

A new Editor-in-Chief holds the best promise for the effective execution of these changes. Douglas S . Clark of the University of California at Berkeley has served admirably as an Associate Editor for biocatalysis since the very beginning of my tenure as Editor of B&B. He has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief effective January 1, 1996. The journal will be in very able hands. Professor Clark possesses the experience, stamina, eclectic taste, and intellect required for this

The summer of the giants. They weren't really giants, of course. Just nice young people who'd decided to camp outside the village for the summer. Ordinary - except they were all over six feet tall, a bit too well dressed, and didn't mix with anyone. No one thought much about them. Until the Night
