Abstract
A numerical algorithm to simulate water flow in variably saturated non‐deformable porous media is presented. The algorithm is based on the numerical approximation of Richards' non‐linear equation. This equation is discretized in time by using a third‐order Crank–Nicholson scheme based on Richardson extrapolation. The proposed time scheme is third‐order accurate and presents advantages over standard time discretizations of Richards' equation. A Galerkin finite element procedure is employed for spatial approximation. Numerical tests showing the performance and numerical properties of the proposed algorithm are presented.
