Applying high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy we identify two precursor states, i.e. adsorbed phenyl (&H,) and benzyne ( C6H4) in line with a recent photoemission and temperature-programmed desorption study. Dipole selection rules are used to deduce information on the adsorbate geometri
