The effect of zinc oxide on the vulcanization enthalpy of various sulphur vulcanization systems has been studied. The enthalpy-zinc oxide plots reveal minima in the natural rubbe~sulphur unaccelerated system as well as in the synthetic polyisoprene-sulphur unaccelerated system, containing extracts o

✦ Synopsis
Possible interactions between curatives of a sulphenamide accelerated sulphur vulcanizing system have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Comparison of the thermograms reveals that in most cases reactions occurred between combinations of two or three of these curatives. However, the most favourable reaction appears to be complex formation between the compounding ingredients zinc oxide, stearic acid and the sulphenamide accelerator. This finding supports the often quoted initial step in the accelerated sulphur vulcanization of natural rubber.

## Abstract Several aspects on the mechanism of vulcanization in the synthetic __cis__‐1,4‐polyisoprene (IR)‐sulfur‐tetramethylthiuram disulphide (TMTD)–ZnO system were harmonized. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms showed that the vulcanization processes became better resolved
