✦ Synopsis

The possibility of heating flame-front electrons with microwaves in a combusting ah'-fucl mixture in the internal combustion eni~ne is considered by means of a model problem. In the model the combustion ,'humber is assumed to be a closed metallic cylinder (cavity) excited in the TMoI o microwave mode. and the electrical loading of an assumed cylindrical shell, flame-front electron plasma is evaluated. It is shown that for the generally accepted averase values of the plasma properties of atmospheric hydrocarbon-air flames, and for typical combustion chamber properties, effective transference of microwave energy to flame-front electron energy occurs. The feasibility, therefore, of efficient microwave heating of flame-front electrons in engines is established.
