A THEORETICAL BASIS FOR HYBRID FINITE ELEMENTS IN DYNAMIC PROBLEMS
The hybrid method was used by Henshell, Neale and Warburton [1 ] for a cylindrical shell finite element of rectangular planform. It was pointed out by Tabarrok and Gass [2] that the theoretical basis of the element was unsound and a modification was proposed. In a reply [3] the original authors showed that in fact the theory was based upon a nodal approximation to the infinitesimal dynamic forces. Of course this was only a heuristic justification. The modification proposed by Tabarrok and Crass was also shown to be disastrous from the viewpoint of computational efficiency. A new method has now been derived which causes the questionable basis of the original paper to disappear. This method, which is described herein, merely involves looking in a different way at the original element which is therefore quite sound even from a rigorous viewpoint.
