A theory for the thermal ignition of a fuel droplet in a hot oxidizing atmosphere is formulated using an existing gas-phase ignition criterion and an analysis for the transient droplet heating process. Limits on the ignitability of a system, either spontaneous or delayed, are identified. A kineticaU
