Abstract

Use is made of the relaxation spectrum to assess the validity of Ferry's method of reduced variables in the case of certain dilute polymer solutions. Both concentration and temperature changes are considered, and it is concluded that Ferry's theory can be expected to have serious limitations whenever the polymer concentration is low enough to allow a significant Newtonian element to enter into the relaxation spectrum.
