Substituted trans-a, /3-dibenzyl-y-butyrolactones were synthesized in a diastereoselective manner by the reaction of the potassium enolates of a, &dibenzyl-ybutyrolactones with electrophiles.

The method was applied to the synthesis of (k)trachelogenin.
