Concurrent symptoms of depression and anxiety are common in elderly people in psychogeriatric units. A group therapy programme is one potentially useful strategy to complement existing modes of treatment. This report describes such a programme.

โฆ Synopsis
The setting up of a support group for depressed elderly patients on discharge from hospital reduced the re-referral and readmission rate for these patients as compared with a control group not offered this therapeutic intervention. Further studies are required to substantiate this finding. However, there are many apparent clinical advantages of running such a group and this therefore should be considered as a practical form of intervention with the depressed elderly.
