0.04 x 2 x 5 mm 3 in size. A freshly deposited film has a high internal friction peak (curve I) at 55 K (vibration frequency 639 Hz), which moves along the temperature axis with changing frequency. The activation energy, determined from the shift of the curves is 0.072 eV. After annealing at 800 K for 1 h the maximum at 55 K disappears (curve 2).

The internal friction and electrical resistance of niobium deformed by 99.8% was also measured (Fig. 5). A maximum in Q-1 (curve 1)3,4 is observed at the superconducting transition temperature. Its connexion with the superconducting transition temperature and the independence of its position with frequency, indicate that it is related to the appearance of the superconducting phase and energy dissipation at the boundary separating the superconducting and normal phases.

A generator system for pulsed power is described which employs a tic superconducting magnet in a magnetic flux compression scheme. Experience with a small-scale generator together with projections of numerical models indicate potential applications to fusion research and commercial power generation.
