✦ Synopsis

A novel subsystem approach is developed for acoustic analysis of parallel perforated pipe arrangements with identical perforated pipes. The analysis is based on the continuous source theory of wave propagation in perforated pipes. It is shown that an n-pipe element with two or more identical perforated pipes can be modelled by using the solutions for a one-pipe element and an m-pipe element, where m Q n. Compared to the usual methods in which all pipes are considered in toto, the proposed subsystem approach provides considerable savings in the computation time because two subsystems of order 2 and 2m have to be solved in place of a system of order 2n. The combination of the subsystems is relatively simple and a general scheme is presented for computer implementation. The application of a new method is demonstrated for a cross-flow muffler with two identical perforated pipes. It can be applied to more advanced muffler configurations with similar computational efficacy.
