β¦ Synopsis
A capacitive prokie with a very small working area has been designed for measurement of vibration amplitude and phase on the structures of the middle ear and on the basilar membrane of the cochlea. Such measurements can be confined to a region with a diameter of less than 0-2 ram. Vibrations down to l /~. can be measured with the aid of a phase sensitive lock-in amplifier, which allows the motion of the basilar membrane to be studied at sound inputs as low as 40 dB SPL. Critical features of the construction are described, the performance compared with that of previous capacitive probes and of the M6ssbauer and optical techniques, and examples of its use for measuring the vibratory frequency responses of the basilar membrane and incus of the guinea pig are given.
