✦ Synopsis

The problem of deposition of particles from a turbulent gas stream is examined. The present analysis is based on recent published research on the structure of a turbulent boundary layer which has shown that a downsweep of fluid penetrates right up to the wall. The deposition rate is calculated assuming that particles are convected to the wall by this downsweep. This removes the objections to previous theories which were based on the concept of a "free-flight" of particles across the sub-layer. The predictions for deposition, in both inertial-and diffusional-controlled situations, are compared with available experimental data and show satisfactory agreement. The point of minimum deposition is identified by the condition Re,# = constant.

Particle transport velocities have been determined from published data for aqueous suspensions and dimensionless particle relaxation times (ti) ranging from 10m4 to 5. These were compared to predictions from several theories of particle transport. There is reasonably good agreement between measured
