β¦ Synopsis
This paper describes the variation in oil "lm thickness (OFT) of a piston-ring package measured with LIF on the piston thrust side in the sliding direction. It is found that the oil control ring OFT di!ers signi"cantly from the theoretical value in the early stage of the down stroke. It is also found that OFT increases where the ring tangential tension is reduced, while it decreases where the ring width is reduced. The scraper ring OFT shows a tendency similar to the oil control ring throughout the cycle. The compression ring OFT is extremely thin around TDC due to oil starvation.
