✦ Synopsis

lNCE different types of tobacco are used S in the manufacture of smoking products, it was thought pertinent to compare these tobacco types with respect to their biological activity in the experimental animal. T o do this four types of cigarettes, composed of Burley, Virginia, Maryland, and Turkish tobaccos respectively, were tested. These cigarettes contained no additives of any kind.

T h e method of cigarette-tar collection and application was the same as that previously reported.4 Because of the high nicotine content of the Burley cigarette tobacco, it was not feasible to test the whole cigarette tar; therefore, to maintain uniformity, the basic tars were rcmoved from all four tobacco types according to procedures previously de-scribed5 T h e basic-free portion of the tars was painted on the barks of 160 Swiss (Millerton) and 160 CAF, (Jackson) mice, three times a week for the life span of the animals. A 50 per cent tar-acetone solution was used.
