✦ Synopsis

A study has been carried out of the solidification of argon in a wide range of argon bubble sizes in aluminium. Using a cryogenic stage samples have been cooled to 78K and the freezing range and lattice parameter of solid argon determined. The results indicate that for very small crystal sizes diffraction from argon will be difficult to detect, at intermediate sizes the argon solidifies epitaxially with the host matrix and for large bubble sizes random crystals may form.

R&mkNous

A computational model is presented for the study of the solidification of a binary alloy. The enthalpy method has been modified and incorporated into both an in-house code SOLCON (Heat Transfer 98, 1998, p. 241) and the commercial CFD code CFX (CFX 4.2: Solver, 1997). A novel extension of the cellular automata technique for microstructural modelling is presented, allowing simulation of the evolution of the complex three-dimensional morphology of porosity during the solidification of an aluminiumsilicon alloy. The complex morphology arises due to the restriction o
