β¦ Synopsis
Tlie first recorded observatioiis on crustacean blood that we have seen a r e in a brief statement by Carus (1824). Subsequently, a number of studies, based mostly upon Astacus fluviatilis, have added detailed knowledge. Recent reviews of tlie literature may be found in papers by Tait and G~iiiii ( '18) and Maluf ('39). To anyone who has not devoted considerable time to a first-hand study of the blood of crustacea, it is difficult to harmonize the types of cells described in soltie of these papers with the types described in others. There is so much discrepancy, contradictioii and uncertainty in the recorded data that a n examination of the blood (hemolymph) of several crustacea seems desirable in an effort to resolve the conflicts, if possible, to bring our knowledge into relation with modern hematological data and to make some contribution toward a total picture of the nature atid functions of blood.
MATERIATL3 AND METHODS
The observations here reported were made during several summers, especially during 1947, and are based principally upon examination of the blood of numerous specimeiis
