The phytoplankton biomass expressed as total cell volume is often of doubtful value due to cell size and volume variations in the organisms present. Cell volume calculations for 95 phytoplankton species and volume-frequency diagrams for 25 dominant species were analyzed for the Adriatic Sea. Recomme

✦ Synopsis
Distribution of nano-and microphytoplankton cell density and biomass (expressed as biovolume) were analyzed at 64 stations in the Adriatic Sea, in July 1984, after the northern Adriatic bloom. Biomass distribution may be indirectly linked with the position of eutrophication sources and currents. "Macroaggregates" formed after the bloom are descriptively analysed.

The development of a heavy phytoplankton bloom (chl. a=36@ mg/ma), which occurred in the summer 1983 in a shallow reservoir, Divor, is described. The study shows that remobilization of phosphate from the sediment was initiating the phytoplankton bloom. This was confirmed not only by calculations of
## Abstract The potential of surface phytoplankton to withstand photostress was investigated in August 1998 along a transect from the mouth of the Peene‐Strom (Pomeranian Bight) to the open Arkona Sea (Baltic). Photosynthetic efficiency, algal class composition and pigment pattern were determined.
