โœฆ Synopsis

Experimental results of the electrochemical synthesis of glyoxylic acid from the reduction of aqueous oxalic acid solutions using an undivided reactor are presented. Using a platinised titanium anode it is shown that current efficiencies (greater than 70%) can be achieved provided the concentration ofglyoxylic acid does not exceed approximately 5g dmm3. Above these concentrations the anodic degradation of glyoxylic acid is large and in practice would necessitate an integrated product separation if the synthesis were to be economic from the point of material yield.
