A vorticitystreamfunction formulation for incompressible planar viscous flows is presented. The standard kinematic field equations are discretized using centred finite difference schemes and solved in a coupled way via a Newton-like linearization scheme. The linearized system of partial differential

✦ Synopsis
In this paper we implement the spatially periodic boundary conditions in ®nite element solutions of the Navier±Stokes equations based on the streamfunction±vorticity formulation. Periodic boundary conditions are enforced at both in¯ow/out¯ow and lower/upper boundaries. As an example of application we consider the ¯uid ¯ow, at two dierent Reynolds numbers, through an array of pin ®ns. The limiting assumption of symmetry conditions at the boundaries parallel to the main ¯ow is shown to yield unphysical-looking con®gurations.
