✦ Synopsis

The purpose of this paper is to present a stochastic model for effects of radiation on cells. The model includes provisions for lethal effects and for transformation to malignant status. Empirical findings indicate the presence of some repair mechanism in the cells, and a way to incorporate this idea into the model is discussed. Comparisons of the derived survival and transformation probabilities with actual data are favorable. The interpretation of the estimated values leads to questions to be investigated by the experimenters.

There is a large body of evidence that stress-induced DNA damage may be responsible for cell lethality, cancer proneness and/or immune reaction. However, statistical features of their repair rate remain poorly documented. In order to interpret the shape of the radiation-induced DNA damage repair cur

The effects of a single dose of irradiation on the biomechanical parameters of the fracture healing process were studied in a rat model. Bystander effects, whereby cells that are not directly exposed to ionizing radiation exhibit adverse biological effects, have been observed in a number of experimental systems. A novel stochastic model of the radiation-induced bystander effect is developed that takes account of spatial location, cel
