A statistical evaluation method for the accuracy of equivalent sound level measurement is proposed theoretically from the viewpoint of reliability. The confidence interval of L,q caused by the finiteness of the sample size is discussed, in the case when the equivalent sound level of a periodic nonstationary random noise of arbitrary probability distribution type is experimentally estimated by using the usual sound level meter and sampling method. Next, a practical method for determining the minimum sample size to obtain the L,q vah~e with a certain confidence coefficient is given by considering several simple cases with the aid of a digital simulation technique. Finally, the theoretical evaluation method is applied to nonstationary road traffic noise data controlled by the traffic signals.
