✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A novel design of a fan‐shaped antenna embedded in semicircle aperture is proposed and experimentally studied in this article. The proposed antenna is fed by a tapered coplanar waveguide (CPW) and has an ultrawide band owing to the coupling between the fan‐shaped radiation unit and the ground. From experimental results, the measured impedance bandwidth of the antenna, determined by −10 dB return loss, can reach an operating bandwidth of 23.36 GHz (1.64–25 GHz), more than 175% with the center frequency operating at about 13.32 GHz. Good radiation patterns and gains covering the operating band have been observed. Details of the antenna design and experimental results are discussed in this article. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A compact CPW-fed aperture-coupled patch antenna is modeled using the moment method code IE3D. It is shown that impro¨ements can be made by optimizing ¨arious parameters of the antenna, such as patch diameter, CPW slot width, etc. The impro¨ements are an increase in the bandwidth of the antenna, in
