A singing Fame, burning a premixed gaseous fuel-air mixture at atmospheric pressure and stabiliaed on a gauze in a tube, has been examined. The driving mechanism, the acoustic modes and the variable position of the velocity node with respect to the flame have been elucidated. It is concluded that the pame is driven by a mechanism similar to that responsible for oscillatory burning in solid propellant rocket motors, and that such a ftame can thus be used to study some aspects of the instability of combustion in solid propellant motors.
