## Abstract By measuring the liver area (maximum seciton) and plotting this against intraβabdoinal area at the same level, one can calculate tolerance levels for 80 per cent of the population (63 normal patients) with a 95 per cent confidence. This provides a simple semiquantitative index in relati

Abstract
The relation between renal length (L) and the distance between the first four lumbar transverse processes, (4TP) as measured by sonography and intravenous urography, has been studied in 20 adults with normal urograms. The ratio of L/4TP (Mean Β± 2.S.D.) was 1.04 Β± 0.22 for sonograms and 1.25 Β± 0.26 for urograms. The possible reasons for these differences are discussed. It is suggested that measurement of the distance between the 4TP is a simple method for estimating expected normal renal size in patients referred for renal ultrasonography.

A sample size calculation for logistic regression involves complicated formulae. This paper suggests use of sample size formulae for comparing means or for comparing proportions in order to calculate the required sample size for a simple logistic regression model. One can then adjust the required sa
