group of people trying to find out what really happens down a mine, by standing at the top of the shaft looking down, talking to miners who pass up and down but not actually getting to the coal face. From such a distance much noise and stirrings are made about models and theories. However, little by way of practical technique or action appears.
In all, I found the book a disappointment. After all, the subject is an important one. We do need better ways of assessing (and improving) organisations. I doubt if this book will help.
