✦ Synopsis

A short history of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is given. Emphasis has been laid on the beginning of NMR studies in Germany, especially in Leipzig, where Felix Bloch received his doctor's degree in 1928 as a student of Werner Heisenberg. The historical review includes also some newer developments of NMR techniques which however were subjectively selected by the author.

In vivo 19F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has the potential to non-invasively measure the concentration of 5-fluorouracil (FUra) and some of its metabolites in humans. Such a measure could be useful in predicting and optimizing the response of individual patients treated with FUra. T
