Chemical reactions initiated by the dissociation of methane in the nitrogen Β―owing afterglow have been studied by the computer modelling. The input experimental data were obtained from the microwave CH 4 /N 2 plasma. The modelling of methane decomposition was based on a macroscopic kinetic approach.

The resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) technique has been used to detect the presence of highly vibrationally excited nitrogen (to at least u" = 26) in the Lewis-Rayleigh afterglow of nitrogen using photoionization via the intennediate a 'l-I, state (Lyman-Birge-Hopfield bands).
